About Us

The Pineville Initiative ceased operations in early 2026. This site is maintained as a public record of the organization's work and contributors.

The Pineville Initiative was a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to closing the financial literacy gap for high school and college students, with a focus on first generation and low income communities who are often overlooked by traditional finance education.

The organization was founded in late 2022 by students from a New York City public high school where a large share of the student body is classified as economically disadvantaged and comes from first and second generation immigrant families. That setting was not unusual. Nearly 2.2 million New Yorkers live below the federal poverty threshold, and the majority of the city earns less than twice that line. The basic financial knowledge needed to navigate adult life, things like budgeting, saving, credit, and informed investing, is missing from most classrooms across the city, and the communities that need it most have the least access to it. The Pineville Initiative was built to close that gap.

What We Did

The Pineville Initiative was run entirely by student volunteers and delivered its programs through three channels. Financial literacy workshops and seminars were co hosted with student clubs in high schools, with curriculum tailored to fit existing club programming and student needs. Alongside the in person work, the team built and maintained a free online course library covering personal finance and Excel, available to any student regardless of school affiliation.

Phi Fiscal was the research division of the Pineville Initiative. The newsletter division published a weekly newsletter covering the economy, markets, and broader macro trends in plain language. The equity research division produced student stock pitches and ran a summer internship program designed to give contributors exposure to the work of researching a company, building an argument, and presenting it to peers and pitch competitions.

By the Numbers

Over three years of operation, the Pineville Initiative reached 50,000 students through its website and research, and received over $20,000 in in kind support through Google for Nonprofits and Microsoft for Nonprofits.

Our Mission

Financial knowledge should not be a privilege. The Pineville Initiative existed to give the next generation of students, especially those without family or school connections to the finance world, the same access to financial education as anyone else.
